Geographic Failover Service

Designed to minimize the impact on your hosting environment by both natural and human disasters, the LAMP Hosts Geographic Failover Service gaurantees extremely quick disaster recovery while minimizing downtime and data loss. The LAMP Host Geographic Failover Service is a highly effective and inexpensive solution to provide High Availability for mission critical web servers.

The LAMP Host Geographic Failover service is built with the following components:

Redundant Servers

As a prerequisite for the LAMP Host Geographic Failover Service clients maintain two identical Managed Servers. The first server acts as the Primary server, and during normal usage it serves all requests. In the event of a failure the second, or Failover, server becomes active and serves all requests.

Data Synchronization

LAMP Host synchronizes the data from the Primary Managed Server to the Failover Managed Server on a daily basis. Both the Primary and Failover Managed Servers are maintained by us with identical hardware & software, and all user specific data is synchronized. The synchronized data includes the following:
/home/ (All user files)
/var/www/ (All web sites - html files, emails, etc.)
MySQL (The MySQL database)
In addition various server configuration files are copied, ensuring that both hosting environments are identical.

Monitoring

LAMP Host utilizes an advanced monitoring system that checks all systems (Primary & Secondary Nameservers, Primary & Failover Managed Servers) and automaticly updates the DNS settings when needed to ensure that clients are being directed to a fully function web server. Each server is checked once a minute, and if a problem is encountered a series of rechecks are sent. As soon as the monitoring system confirms that the server is unavailable it automaticly updates the DNS settings to point to the new server, and also pages the on-call LAMP Host Tech to notify them of the incident.

DNS

DNS is the mechanism used to point clients to your Primary or Failover Managed Server. When using the LAMP Host Geographic Failover Service, your LAMP Host maintained DNS settings are configured with a low TTL (5 minutes). This means that the DNS servers used by your clients will do a new DNS lookup for your site every 5 minutes.

Putting it all together

Putting the above components in place, the Geographic Failover Service ensures minimized downtime and data loss.
1) Once per day data on the servers is synchronized.
2) The LAMP Host Primary & Secondary Nameservers are both configured with monitoring software that continually checks each other and the Primary & Failover Managed Servers.
3) If the Primary Managed Server becomes unavailable, the Nameservers automaticly update their DNS records to point to the Failover Managed Server.
4) Simultaneously with step 3 LAMP Host Tech Support is paged to notify them of the problem.
Downtime is reduced to no more than 15 minutes, with typical outages no more than 5 to 10 minutes.

Fees

The LAMP Host Geographic Failover Service fees are $150 per month. In addition clients will need two identical Managed Servers, one acting as the Primary Server and the other as the Failover Server. Fees for a complete solution vary depending on the Managed Server selected.
